Why install dust extraction systems in your body shop?

Equipping your body shop with efficient dust extraction systems should not be considered optional – it is fundamental in order to protect the workers’ health and ensure high-quality work.

An approach which aims to create a healthy work environment translates into greater productivity, and therefore increased business.

Dust extraction systems for body shops: tips and solutions

Installing a modern, cutting-edge dust extraction system (pillar link) has different positive effects on the efficiency of a car body shop. Sanding work – essential to perfect the shape and surface finish of vehicle bodywork – indeed produces fine dust and powder which disperses in the air.

This has two potential consequences:

  • The dust settles around the body shop, with negative effects on the quality and precision of the final painting process
  • The technicians and operatives responsible for performing these operations could breathe in or ingest the dust, with consequent health risks

It is therefore essential to equip body shops with high-performance dust extraction systems, which remove dust and powder during the sanding process before it can spread through the air and affect operatives’ health, as well as compromising the cleanliness, tidiness and healthiness of the workstations.

The two types of dust extraction systems: fixed and portable

The choice of the most suitable system depends on the actual operational needs of the body shop, for example:

  • Frequency of use
  • Intensity of the sanding operations
  • Number of workstations

Below we take a look at the differences between mobile and fixed systems for extraction of sanding dust.

Portable Systems

Portable dust extraction systems are systems which do not require permanent installation: they are therefore compact, stand-alone systems on wheels for great practicality. They are suitable for smaller auto and body shops which do not create large quantities of dust and/or do not sand bodywork every day. A mobile system can be the ideal solution for body shops with a limited number of workstations, located in different areas, potentially some distance from each other. In this case, the ability to move the dust extraction systems is an enormous advantages in terms of optimising not only time, but also space.

Fixed Systems

On the contrary, a fixed dust extraction system involves a permanent installation, with a series of components such as: arms with central units, panels, suspended heads, central units, turbines, aluminium pipework. A fixed system is the best solution for large service centres, where the quantity of sanding dust can reach very high levels.
